The Jerzy Spława-Neyman Institute of Official Statistics was established by the Central Statistical Office President’s ordinance no. 20 of the 22nd December 2009. The Institute of Official Statistics operates as a official statistics service unit on the basis of the Official Statistics Act of 29th June 1995 and its own statute.

The Institute’s objective is to conduct research and implementation work, supporting the development of official statistics in Poland, the European Statistical System and official statistics at international level. Specifically, the work concentrates on:

• the theory and methodology of statistical research
• information standards, organization and technology of the official statistics systems and statistical research
• systems relating to statistical information sources
• statistical education
• other scientific topics of importance to the official statistics

 The Institute intends to achieve its goals through:

• the initiation, organization and conduct of research work in statistics and related fields for both internal and external needs and orders
• close cooperation with different official statistics units, related research institutes, universities and international organizations, both at national and international levels
• the provision of statistical education
• providing opinion in the stated areas of the Institute’s expertise
• the publication of results of research work
• organization and participation in national and international conferences, workshops and symposia related to Institute’s work
