The importance of the tourism industry for economic, social and cultural development in Europe and the role of tourism as a driver of development and socioeconomic integration are generally acknowledged. This publication takes a look at the contribution made by the tourism industry to the labour market in the EU, focusing on the pattern of employment in the tourist accommodation sector.
Three countries recently joined the euro area, namely Slovenia, Cyprus and Malta. Slovakia which will join in January 2009. This publication presents output and employment from 2000 to nowadays through short-term business statistics.
The latest estimates for 2006 show that levels of regional disparities in employment and unemployment have been narrowing over the last five years. Notwithstanding these general labour market improvements, almost 20% of the EU-27 active population is still living in underperforming regions as regards unemployment.
This short publication analyses the two kinds of regional labour market disparity indicators: the dispersion of employment and unemployment rates and the index of underperforming regions.

72 600 agricultural holdings were recorded in Sweden in the 2007 Farm Structure Survey which represents a 4.2% decrease since 2005. The farms with at least 1 European Size Unit (ESU) have suffered a more significant reduction (-13%). This drop affects all size classes, but with greater impact on farms under 20 ha (-22%).
