Euro area GDP down by 0.2% and EU27 GDP stable

Euro area (EA15) GDP declined by 0.2% and EU27 GDP was unchanged in the second quarter of 2008 compared with the previous quarter, according to second estimates from Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities. In the first quarter of 2008, growth rates were +0.7% in the euro area and +0.6% in the EU27.

Volume of retail trade up by 0.3% in euro area

In August 2008, compared with July 2008, the volume of retail trade rose by 0.3% in the euro area (EA15) and by 0.4% in the EU27. In July retail trade increased by 0.1% and 0.3% respectively.

Industrial producer prices down by 0.5% in euro area

In August 2008 compared with July 2008, the industrial producer price index fell by 0.5% in the euro area (EA15) and by 0.7% in the EU27. In July, prices rose by 1.3% and 1.2% respectively.

Euro area unemployment up to 7.5%

The euro area (EA15) seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate stood at 7.5% in August 2008, compared with 7.4% in July. It was 7.4% in August 2007. The EU27 unemployment rate was 6.9% in August 2008, unchanged compared with July. It was 7.1% in August 2007.

Euro area inflation estimated at 3.6%

Euro area annual inflation is expected to be 3.6% in September 2008 according to a flash estimate issued by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities. It was 3.8% in August.

An EU27 surplus in trade in goods with India of 3.2 bn euro in 2007

Between 2000 and 2007, EU27 trade in goods with India more than doubled in value: exports rose from 13.7 billion euro to 29.5 bn, while imports increased from 12.8 bn to 26.3 bn. As a result, the EU27 surplus in trade with India increased from 0.8 bn in 2000 to 3.2 bn in 2007. This increased surplus was mainly due to a surplus in manufactured goods, which rose from 0.9 bn in 2000 to 4.7 bn in 2007. India accounted in 2007 for 2.4% of EU27 exports and 1.8% of EU27 imports, and was the EU27's 9th most important trading partner.
