According to the latest revisions, the EU27 external current account recorded a deficit of 26.5 billion euro in the first quarter of 2008, compared with a deficit of 30.4 bn in the first quarter of 2007 and a deficit of 7.3 bn in the fourth quarter of 2007.
In May 2008 compared with April 2008, the euro area (EA15) industrial new orders index fell by 3.5%. In April the index rose by 2.0%. In the EU27 new orders decreased by 4.7% in May 2008 after growing by 3.6% in April. Excluding ships, railway & aerospace equipment industrial new orders declined by 2.5% in the euro area and by 2.4% in the EU27.
In 2007, 218.5 million resident persons in the EU27 aged 15 years or more had a job or a business activity. The total employment rate for people aged 15-64 was 65.4% in 2007, compared with 62.1% in 2000 and 64.5% in 2006. The employment rate for women was 58.3% in 2007, up from 53.6% in 2000 and 57.3% in 2006, and the rate for older people, i.e. those aged 55-64, was 44.7%, also up from 36.8% in 2000 and 43.5% in 2006.
The first estimate for the euro area (EA15) trade balance with the rest of the world in May 2008 gave a 4.6 bn euro deficit, compared with +1.4 bn in May 2007. The April 20082 balance was +2.5 bn, compared with +2.0 bn in April 2007. In May 2008 compared with April 2008, seasonally adjusted exports fell by 3.4% and imports by 1.3%.
In the construction sector, seasonally adjusted production increased by 0.2% in the euro area (EA15) and by 0.3% in the EU27 in May 2008, compared to the previous month. In April, production decreased by 0.6% and 0.5% respectively.
Euro area annual inflation was 4.0% in June 2008, up from 3.7% in May. A year earlier the rate was 1.9%. Monthly inflation was 0.4% in June 2008.
In May 2008 compared with April 2008, seasonally adjusted industrial production fell by 1.9% in the euro area (EA15) and by 1.4% in the EU27. In April production grew by 1.0% and 0.3% respectively.
EU27 inhabitants made 438 million trips of four nights or more in 2006. Of those trips, 61% were domestic (made within the country) and 39% outbound (made in other countries). Among the Member States for which these data are available, there was a preference for domestic trips in twelve Member States and outbound in twelve. Over three quarters of trips made by the population in Greece (89%), Romania (88%), Spain (86%), France (83%), Poland (81%), Portugal (79%) and Italy (75%) were domestic trips. On the other hand, over 70% of all trips were outbound trips in Luxembourg (99%), Belgium (81%), Ireland (77%) and Slovenia (72%)
In the EU27, gross inland energy consumption was 1 825 million tonnes of oil equivalent (toe) in 2006, stable compared with 2005, while energy production decreased by 2.3% to 871 mn toe. As a result, net imports increased by 2.4% in 2006 and the energy dependence rate rose to 54% from 53% in 2005.
